SMD Starter Kit: Linear

SMD (Surface Mount Device) starter kit of common linear components. Diodes, LEDs, transistors, voltage regulators and op-amps are all ready to provide humble service to your next grand project. The full kit has 575 parts in total.

The components are supplied in translucent pages for a B5 SMD ring binder. The kit includes two separate sets of stickers so you can choose your desired order for the components.

Signal Diodes

Part 1N4148W the standard small signal silicon diode. Part MBR120VLSF is a Schottky diode chosen for its low forward voltage, and good for reverse polarity protection in prototypes. Part BAT54S is two diodes connected in series in a small SOT‑23 package.

Zener Diodes

A set of Zener diodes with reverse breakdown voltages matching the common supply voltages. Note that when lower voltage Zener diodes are used with small reverse currents, their breakdown voltage tends to be lower. For a few milliamps, a 5V1 diode will be more like 5V0 (TTL supply) and a 5V6 diode more like 5V5 (USB supply).

LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes)

The white LED is supplied in a larger 1206 package to serve as an illuminator. The red, green and blue are supplied in 0603 packages to serve as indicators.

Transistors

Parts SS8050 and SS8550 are standard BJT power transisistors defined in the 1980s. These parts supersede older devices like 2N2222, as the SS8050 has both higher current rating and flatter current gain curve. Part 2SC3356 is a common high frequency signal transistor suitable for RF applications. Parts SI230X are trench MOSFETs with good power handling capability, suitable for use as load switches.

Voltage Regulators

Part AP2210K‑ADJTRG1 has an adjustable output voltage, with a maximum of 15V input. Part AP2112K-3.3TRG1 has a fixed 3V3 output, to supply common microcontroller and logic devices. Both parts manufactured by Diodes Incorporated.

Opamps (Operational Amplifiers)

Part TLV9001SI is a CMOS opamp with a maximum working voltage of 5V5. This part includes a shutdown (S) pin to disable the output when desired, so it can also serve as an analogue switch. Part LM321H is a high voltage BJT opamp, good for up to 36V.
